Jason* is one of the young people who went on a rafting trip with Peak 7. He, like the other participants in this day’s trip is from a residential psychiatric facility for at-risk youth. His counselors told us that he had a reputation as a “gangster” and never shared in group discussion.
After his trip, Jason was a changed person. He went back to the facility and apologized to staff and other residents for things that he had done to them weeks before. During his next debriefing, he opened up for the first time to his group. We hope to work more with Jason and eventually train him as a guide. Giving Jason a job during the summer will help him to keep involved in positive activities and be able to avoid trouble.
It was amazing taking troubled teens down the river for their first time ever. The amount of energy, after they got over their fear, and the teamwork these kids exhibited was incredible. Placing their trust in something other than themselves was a major growing and learning experience for each of them.
